Students author own books

As part of the Enrichment Program at Flomaton Middle School, seventh graders in Danielle Wallace, Jennifre Williams and Jerilyn Currys’ seventh grade language arts classes were given the opportunity to write their own books.

Curry said that Federal Programs Director Sarah Watkins pursued innovative learning opportunities for the students and found a fund source for the project.

The ‘Write Brain Books’ program, which allows students from concept to publishing, compose their own book, compete with artwork and their picture, was chosen for the enrichment program.

According to their website, Write Brain Books are richly illustrated, textless books, with lines on the pages, ready for any writer’s content that are designed to ignite and inspire creativity and imagination in kids of all ages and enable kids to write their own stories, publish beautiful hardcover copies, and build a personal library of selfauthored books.

Curry especially thanked Watkins for her effort and enrichment teacher Elizabeth Hurley, for sharing the Write Brain Books program materials and including her students in the program.

Students are responsible for creating the storyline and the language and are acountable for every step of the process, from concept to publication.

Each student receives a kit box with the several templates and art to choose from. When published, the books have a finished, glossy look and artwork that is custom to each student’s story they keep and take home.

“You’re an author,” said Curry. “It helps with creativity. We are able to teach skills through actual writing of the book.”
