The Ridge Road Water System will soon go through some major upgrades after the Escambia County Commission agreed to seek a $350,000 Community Development Block Grant on behalf of the city of Brewton.
Following a public hearing with no objections, Brewton Utilities Superintendent Ray Madden said he was confident the city would be awarded the grant. A $35,000 match will be required, which will be paid for by the Brewton Utilities Board.
“This is another example of the city and the county working together,” said Commissioner David Stokes.
Madden said the grant money will be used to replace water meters, extend main lines and replace 3-inch water lines with 6-inch lines mostly in the Springhill area.
Madden said once the work begins there will be very little interruption of service and customers will be made aware of outages in advance. Madden said water to houses will be interrupted for a short time while the new water meters are installed.
In other business Monday the commission approved the reappointments of Bo Brantley, Sharon Davis and Ruth Harrell to the Escambia County Health Care Authority.
County Engineer Bill Bridges also announced that Sharon Blair will be retiring from the engineering office after 47 years. He said Blair will step down at the end of the month and that Emily Douglas will be replacing her and is already working with Blair.
