The Century Council Monday night approved Mayor Henry Hawkin's recommendation to make town employee Heath Burkett the new water and wastewater superintendent of Century.
Burkett had been acting as superintendent for the water department since former water superintendent Alicia Jernigan submitted her resignation in March 2019.
“We've advertised that position and nobody applied, except Heath,” said Hawkins. “I recommend we promote Heath up to superintendent and back pay him from the time he started.”
Councilman James Smith made a motion to promote Burkett and back pay him from the first payday after Jernigan left, which was seconded by Gomez. The motion carried.
Council members asked if Burkett was qualified to be superintendent and Town Clerk Kim Godwin assured Burkett has all the required qualifications.
