Flomaton's Daquan Johnson, the 2018 Class 3A Player of the Year and Most Valuable Player in last year's state championship game where the Hurricanes captured the school's first football state championship, heads into the 2019 season with high expectations, but one decision he won't have to make is where he will attend college. Johnson has verbally committed to continuing his football career at Troy University.
Johnson said he made the decision to commit early for several reasons, but most important to him was to get that out of the way and concentrate of this year's football team.
“If I get injured, it's better that I commit now instead of possibly having to go somewhere I don't want to go,” Johnson said. “Now I can focus on my team.”
Johnson committed to Troy over several other offers and other Division I teams showing an interest. He said he liked the small-town atmosphere at Troy and was impressed with the coaching staff and the fact that Troy wins. He said he is being recruited to play safety in college and plans to study accounting.
“The coaches there treated me like family,” he said. “They just built a brand new rec center and I'm looking forward to it.”
But he said the first order of business is to help Flomaton win another state championship.
“Our goal is the same as last year and go out and win another one,” Johnson said. “But that was last year and they can't help us this year, so we have to step up and win.”
Flomaton head football coach Doug Vickery said he was proud of what Johnson has accomplished so far and thinks he has a bright future ahead of him.
“He had a lot of opportunities in terms of football scholarships, probably 10 or 11 D1 schools,” Vickery said, “good schools.”
“He deserves it,” Vickery added. “He's worked hard and is a very good student. A lot of schools are still showing a lot of interest.”
“Troy is a good fit for him,” Vickery said. “It's a small town, which fits him well. He's been a good leader for us and will be a good leader for them.”
