Today's column is not so much history as thankfulness for living in a rural area. When my family arrived at Jimmy's Grill in Molino last Friday night we were surprised to learn that a band was playing on the porch. Quite a few people were sitting in the chairs set up just off the porch enjoying the music.
We at first thought that was the waiting line, but learned that those people had either already eaten or had just come to listen. We actually had a short wait for a table. The band is one of the bands that participate in the Barrineau Park Historical Society's monthly music night and also plays at Jimmy's every other Friday night. (Because of other obligations on their regularly scheduled night, the band will actually be playing next on Friday, Autgust 30th.)
Upcoming Friday Music Nights at the Barrineau Park Community Center are: September 6th – Highway Home (bluegrass) October 4th – The Chestang Family (gospel and bluegrass) November 1st – Stringfarm Bluegrass Band (bluegrass) December 6th – The Kendricks (country and gospel) Friday Music Nights are free; there is a donation jar to help the band pay expenses. The Barrineau Park Historical Society runs a concession stand before the band plays, beginning at 5:30 pm. The music is from 6:30 to 8:30.
Also coming up at the Barrineau Park Community Center is The Gathering on Saturday, September 14th. I attended the gathering last year and enjoyed talking with several people who came by the ASHS booth.
There was also entertainment going on inside the building; I did not get to go in for that as I was the only one manning the ASHS booth. This year I will not be able to attend, but Russell Brown will be there representing ASHS. Go visit if you can. ASHS members, go help him if you can.
Other festivals coming up soon are: the Jay Peanut Festival and Flomaton Railroad Days in September, the Munson Heritage Festival in October and the Baker Heritage Festival in early November. ASHS will have a booth at each of these. We always enjoy the ones we get to attend. Come join us.
Our Sawmill Day will not be until next May, but you are also invited to make use of our James Houston Jones Historic Park located at 4th and Jefferson in Century. Our picnic area is always available and Old 100, our restored sawmill engine, is always on view. Our museums are open most Saturdays from 10 am until 2 pm.
Museum tours are available most anytime by appointment. You can call me at 850-417-9803 to make arrangements, or you can just drop by and start calling the numbers on the sign on the porch at the Leach House Museum until you find someone who is available to let you in.
Our next monthly meeting will be Tuesday, September 17th at 6 pm in the Leach House. Visitors are always welcome. We have a brief business meeting, a speaker and a meal. Come when you can.
