Council eyes one meeting

Flomaton Councilman Buster Crapps made a motion to require the town council to meet two times a month, but later withdrew his motion with a decision made to schedule the second motion but the ability to cancel it if need be.

Alabama law requires the council to meet once a month and that mandatory meeting has been set for the second Monday of the month. The council previously met on the first and fourth Mondays of each month but later changed to only have a scheduled meeting on the second Monday of each month.

Crapps has brought the issue up before saying council members are paid $200 per month and if they only meet one time it equates to about $100 per hour.

Crapps also said when issues come up and special meetings are called, some council members may not be able to attend.

Councilman Jim Johnson suggested leaving the second meeting scheduled but if no council action is required, the meeting can be canceled.

Mayor Dewey Bondurant Jr., pointed out that Crapps made the motion in 2017 to go to one council meeting a month.

“I half agree with Buster,” said Councilman Charlie Reardon. “The program needs to keep us informed.”

Bondurant said he would make sure the council members were informed of what's going on.

Councilwoman Lillian Dean said she was not receiving the texts or emails about issues but Town Clerk Jamie Young pointed out that she had responded to emails and texts.

Crapps also noted that the council couldn't vote on anything via email or text.

“Leave it open, we can always cancel if we need to,” Johnson said of the second meeting.

Mayor Bondurant also said he would ask Police Chief Bryan Davis and Utilities Superintendent Shaun Moye to be at the first meeting of each month.

Crapps then dropped his motion to have the second meeting.
