An Evergreen woman and McIntosh man were both charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance following a traffic stop in East Brewton after officers found spice and drug paraphernalia in their possession.
Carl Faircloth Sr., 39, 121 Chapman St., Evergreen, and Anna Rae Lynn Covington, 34, 171 Jody Ridge Road, McIntosh, were both arrested Sept. 6. Faircloth was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. Covington was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and tampering with evidence.
According to reports released by the East Brewton Police Department, Sgt. Paige Howell initiated a traffic top on a vehicle traveling on Dailey Street that failed to use a turn signal.
Sgt. Howell made contact with the driver, identified as Covington, and reported she was extremely nervous and also reported he smelled the odor of spice coming from within the vehicle.
When asked, Covington said there was nothing illegal inside the vehicle but denied the officer's consent to search the car. Howell's drug-sniffing dog alerted on the vehicle and he asked the occupants to step out of the vehicle.
Auxiliary Officer Bryan Martin was searching the passenger, identified as Faircloth.
Inside the vehicle officers reported finding a spice cigarette on the driver-side arm rest and another spice cigarette under the passenger seat.
Both were placed under arrest. When Officer Martin got Faircloth up from sitting on the ground he found a bag of spice where Faircloth had been sitting.
Howell reported when he went to place handcuffs on Covington he noticed that she was trying to destroy a needle that she had stepped on.
