Alfonzie Cottrell

Alfonzie Cottrell, 81, died Monday, August 26, 2019.

Mr. Cottrell was born April 22, 1938, to Jack and Betty L. Cottrell in Century. A graduate of Carver High School, he worked for Exxon Mobile as a 1st class operator, retiring with 30 years. He joined Edward Point Christian Church, where he was Superintendent of Sunday School and Chairman of the Deacon Board for 55 years. He planted a garden that fed members of the community for many years.

The funeral was held at 11 a.m., Saturday, August 31, at Edward Point Christian Church with Rev. Sherry Johnson and Bishop Russell Fountain officiating. Burial followed at Century Cemetery with Jackson-McMurray Funeral Home directing.

Mr. Cottrell is survived by his wife of 61 years, Martha E. Cottrell of Century; one son, Calvin (Annie) Cottrell, Sr. of Century; one daughter, Sherry C. Johnson of Century; three brothers, James Cottrell of Brooklyn, N.Y., Andrew Cottrell of Jackson, Miss. and Leo Cottrell of Ann Arbor, Mich.; one sister, Ella Rose Culliver of Century; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and other family members.

Mr. Cottrell was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Betty Cottrell; five brothers, Cecil Cottrell, Leroy Cottrell, Willie Cottrell, Napoleon Cottrell and Cornelius “JL” Cottrell; and other extended family members.
