Area events start Thurs. in Century
As we observe Veteran's Day next Monday, Nov. 11, Century, Jay, Atmore, Brewton and Flomaton have scheduled events on various days to celebrate and honor past and present veterans.
At 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, Century will hold a Veteran's Day Celebration at the Century Community Center, located at 6001A Industrial Blvd. Guests are invited to bring a photo of their veteran for display during the ceremony.
Veterans can enjoy a free breakfast and complimentary gift at the Anchor Cafe, located at 211 Trammell Street in Atmore, from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. The breakfast is hosted by the Atmore VFW Auxiliary #7016. At 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 12, Jay High School will honor our servicemen and women with a light breakfast in the media center, followed by an assembly in the school auditorium at 10 a.m. It is open to all veterans and current service members. On Thursday, Nov. 14, West Gate Village in Brewton will celebrate their annual Veteran's Day Celebration at 2 p.m. Come join guests with an awards ceremony sponsored by Comfort Care Hospice.
The Flomaton Lions Club will host a Veteran's Day 5K Run and Walk starting at 8 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 16, at the Flomaton Community Center, located at 600 McCurdy Street. Registration for the run/walk starts at 6:30 a.m.
The event will last until about 3 p.m. and include a cornhole tournament, lunch, a flag retiring ceremony performed by the Boy Scouts, patriotic music and a live broadcast with radio station WPFL 105.1.
Veterans and their families are invited to join the festivities and runners and walkers can register early for $20 and the first 50 people who pre-registered will receive a T-shirt.
Registration forms can be found by visiting Veterans Day Celebration 5K Run/Walk on Facebook. Print out and fill out the form and mail it with a check payable to Flomaton Lion's Club to Flomaton Lions Club 5K, PO Box 194, Flomaton, Ala. 36441.
Registration the day of the race is $25 and the first 50 people to register will get a T-shirt.
The Flomaton Lions will dedicate a marble slab to honor service members and their service at the Flomaton Welcome Center around 11 a.m.
“We want to hold an annual event that pays homage to our dedicated men and women in the forces,” said Lion President Wayne Key. “It's up to us to remind people of their service and sacrifice to give us the freedoms we have. We hope this event will continue as a way to honor and celebrate our veterans.”
