After global cooling fizzled out in the 1970s, we were warned about global warming for a couple decades, but that too failed to gain traction with the masses. Then the global warming alarmists reinvented an impending climate catastrophe as climate change which gets plenty of press propaganda. It has had annoying impacts like depriving people of plastic straws, messing with our light bulbs, and excessive spending on inefficient alternative energies, but it has thus far not attained its intended goal of transforming and controlling society. So the Alliance of World Scientists has published a new grave “Warning of Climate Emergency” in BioScience.
The World Scientists still warn of more extreme weather, a hotter planet, and rising ocean levels that will make large swathes of the planet uninhabitable and precipitate “untold suffering,” but they assert just monitoring atmospheric and ocean temperatures is inadequate. They propose global decision makers work with them to watch more pertinent “vital sign” indicators like tree cover loss, energy consumption, meat consumption, and human population growth.
The World Scientists find even more troubling trends in booming air travel and growing GDP. That’s right, they blame the climate crisis squarely on the “excessive consumption of the wealthy lifestyle.” So if you are eating meat, traveling, and in general prospering, you are killing the earth. They are essentially claiming that improving quality of life is detrimental to the environment, so they insist governments need to enforce strict diets on their people and severely curb travel. You will lose weight and you’re not going anywhere.
Echoing Stalin and Mao, the most ominous vital sign they want to control is population growth! When governments decide there are too many people, they will find ways to purge their populations, so more abortions, perhaps forced, and more euthanasia will naturally follow. These are frightening and horrific notions, but not new and still wrong. Over 200 years ago, Thomas Malthus wrote extensively on how economics and food production could never keep pace with population growth, but agriculture has since advanced to produce enough food for an exponentially growing global population if we can only get food to everyone.
Stanford Professor Paul Ehrlich warned in his 1968 book, “The Population Bomb,” that unchecked population growth would result in worldwide famine in the 1970s and 80s; and that by the 1990s we would all be starving. World population has more than doubled since then and none of his rubbish predictions have come to pass. Just like dangerously rising ocean levels and an intolerably warming planet have not manifested; it’s all junk science. The climate is dynamic and has always been changing, but it’s not manmade nor catastrophic.
While all the climate hysteria is demonstrably wrong, the real point the World Scientists make here is their admission that they seek the submission of all peoples to their tyrannical demands and they subscribe to communism. This supposed study and petition is not about the climate; it is ammunition for totalitarians to dominate the world under the auspices that they must deprive the masses of any luxury, liberty, and perhaps even life to save the planet.
These ostensible defenders of the earth have dropped the mask. They have been lecturing for decades that we need severe carbon taxes to curb fossil fuel use which would obviously hobble the world economy, but now in a rare moment of honesty they admit we must reduce GDP growth! They don’t want to just slow economic growth; they want to shrink our economies. That inevitably means quality of life must decline. Unless they contemplate genocide, the only way to achieve this is to turn the vast majority of the global population into peasants barely subsisting.
Peasants fit neatly into socialism where all powerful governments control meager resources through central planning. The masses get the crumbs while the elite politicians and government technocrats enjoy the fruits telling us we should be thankful they can keep us alive. A climate emergency is just another excuse for the same age old story where power hungry despots seek domination and oppression of the people. Thankfully, Americans are not fooled.
