Escambia Academy moved to its fourth consecutive AISA semi-final game with a 49-0 victory over Lakeside Friday night and will host Edgewood Academy this Friday night for a chance to advance to the state championship game for the fourth straight year.
This past Friday night the Cougars only took 15 offensive snaps in the first half but led 21-0. The Cougars then put up 28 points in the third quarter and cruised to the 49-0 victory.
The winner of EA (8-3) and Edgewood (9-2) will face the winner of the other semi-final Class AA matchup between Autauga Academy and Patrician Academy next Friday at Troy University for the championship game. The championship game will begin at 3:30 p.m.
EA head coach Hugh Fountain said his Cougars played a great game with the defense not only shutting down the Lakeside offense but also scoring its sixth defensive touchdown of the year.
While Escambia Academy rolled up 336 yards of total offense, the Cougars held Lakeside to 30 yards rushing and 69 yards passing for a total offensive effort of 99 yards.
On EA's first offensive play Friday night, Ty Williams caught a 19-yard touchdown pass from Landon Sims. Orlando Medea kicked the PAT and the Cougars led 7-0, which is how the first quarter ended.
Sims scored on a 1-yard run early in the second quarter and Medea added the PAT to give EA a 14-0 lead.
Daughtry McGhee scored on a 25-yard run later in the quarter and after Medea's PAT, Escambia took a 21-0 lead at the half.
The Cougars exploded for 28 points in the third quarter to put the game away. Shannon Wheat scored on back-to-back 8-yard touchdown runs, McGhee returned an interception 36 yards for a touchdown and Tyrese Smith scored on a 32-yard run. Medea added all the PAT's and the Cougars led 49-0 heading into the fourth quarter.
