Flomaton Community Center on Saturday, Nov. 16
Last Saturday, Nov. 16, the Flomaton Community Center on McCurdy Street was buzzing with energy as runners and walkers who endured the chill took off to complete the Flomaton Lions Club’s annual Veteran’s Day Celebration 5K Run and Walk to honor past and present veterans and their families. Matt and Teresa Dobson were there providing completion times and awards for the 20 -plus participants.
Boy Scout Troop #31 raised the flag and the Star-Spangled Banner was sung to honor the colors and begin the day’s events.
Around 10:30 that morning, a memorial dedication to those who have served in all branches of the military was held at the Flomaton Welcome Center, with a marble slab that reads, “Never Forget Their Service” presented to the town of Flomaton’s Mayor Dewey Bondurant. WPFL 105.1 Legends radio with Larry White and T.H. Merritt was there, broadcasting the dedication live.
At 12 p.m., lunch was served to veterans and their families at the community center. Afterwards, a flag retirement ceremony was held as Boy Scouts prepared the stripes and field of the flag to allow each veteran present to place them in the fire.
Members of the the Flomaton High School band were there providing patriotic songs for the occasion. The FHS LEOs came to assist the Lions with the event. Thanks to Modern Woodmen of America, the Ptomey family and others for their donations and hard work to help the Lions honor those who have served and are serving in the military this Veteran’s Day.
