$25K committed to FHS

The town of Flomaton's quest to build a new concession stand and bathrooms at Hurricane Park received a commitment from the town council to put up $25,000 toward the estimated $150,000 project.

Mayor Dewey Bondurant, Jr., told the council he's confident the county will put in $25,000, the school board may help with $25,000 and Poarch will put in $75,000.

Town Attorney Chuck Johns said the school board wanted to see drawings and also wanted to see the commitment from the town before it committed any funds.

Councilman Jim Johnson said he talked with Superintendent John Knott and he wants to see plans before any decision is made.

Bondurant said the current concession stand and bathrooms were built in 1986 or 1987 and the bathrooms are not ADA compliant.

The school system uses the park for baseball, girls' softball and other activities.

“I'm not concerned about what they will do, we need to figure out what we can do,” said Councilman Buster Crapps.

Councilwoman Lillian Dean said she felt Little League should also put up some money.

Johnson said the town had to at least address the bathroom problem to get them in compliance with handicap regulations.

Bondurant also told the council he could raise the additional money to complete the project.

“I don't like committing until we have the money,” Crapps said.

Bondurant said the town has almost $20,000 in its capital account and he can raise the rest of the money.

Dean made the motion for the town to put up the $25,000 with the agreement that the other entities also put up funds. The motion passed unanimously.
