We've covered a lot of high school football games over the years but what's coming up this Friday night in Flomaton ranks at the top of games that feature two teams from Escambia County.
T.R. Miller will come to Flomaton Friday night to play the Hurricanes in the quarter finals of the Class 3A playoffs. That's huge no matter how you slice it.
It was back in the mid to late 1990s when T.R. Miller and W.S. Neal met in two such games and those were huge.
Friday night will be special for a lot of reasons. Not only is it for a chance to advance to the semi-finals, but it's a matchup of teams that live 15 miles apart. They know each other as friends, they know each other as competitors. They played against each other about a month ago.
To us, it's the biggest game ever played in Flomaton. Not taking anything away from last year's heart-stopping 34-33 win over Providence Christian to send Flomaton to its first ever title game, this is different. It's different because it's so close. We know them, they know us.
As the college football playoff committee ponders strength of schedule, we'd also like to point out that three of the eight teams remaining in the Class 3A playoffs are from Region 1 – Flomaton, T.R. Miller and Mobile Christian. That speaks volumes to us of the road these three teams have taken to get to the quarter finals.
If you want to see high school football at its best, you need to be at Flomaton High School this Friday night.
