Escambia Academy defeated Edgewood Academy 49-7 Friday night in a semi-final playoff game that will send the Cougars to the AISSA Class AA state championship game for the fourth straight year this Friday at Troy University.
Escambia Academy will face Autauga Academy for the title in a 3 p.m. kickoff. It also marks the Cougars' fifth finals in six years with state titles coming in 2014 and 2017.
This past Friday night against Edgewood, EA rushed to a 28-7 lead at the half and never looked back in the 49-7 victory.
Landon Sims opened the scoring on a 9-yard run but the PAT failed to give EA the early 6-0 lead. Ty Williams then hauled in a 47-yard touchdown pass from Landon Sims and Daughtry McGhee carried the two-point try into the end zone to give EA a 14-0 lead.
Edgewood scored on a 12 yard run to make it 14-7, but EA answered with Sims' 10-yard touchdown run and Orlando Medea's PAT made it 21-7 at the end of the first quarter.
McGhee scored on a 1-yard run and Medea's PAT made it 28-7 at the end of the half.
Shannon Wheat scored on a 70-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter and Petey McCants returned an interception 44 yards for a touchdown in the third. Medea's two PATs made the score 42-7.
EA wrapped up the scoring on Wheat's 27-yard run, followed by Medea's PAT for the final 49-7 margin.
On the night EA rushed for 288 yards and had 161 through the air for a total offensive effort of 449.
Edgewood was held to 99 yards of total offensive with 62 on the ground and 37 through the air.
Wheat rushed for 101 yards and two touchdowns and Sims had 100 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
Sims was six of eight passing for 161 yards and two touchdowns.
