When you are pushing for a cause, doesn't it make you cringe when the cause you are pushing for gets slapped in the face and while you won't admit it, you have to take a step backwards and recalculate your strategy?
Well, the gun control nuts are scratching their heads after a 71-year old man shot and killed a would-be mass killer inside a Texas church on Dec. 29.
I've read multiple reports about the shooting from multiple sources. I came to the conclusion that an armed gunman opened fire inside the West Freeway Church of Christ in White Settlement, Texas, which has been described as a suburb of Fort Worth, Texas. Through various sources I checked there were about 240 people attending the church service at the time of the shooting. The original shooter was described as 43-year old Keith Thomas Kinnuen, who was described in most stories I read as a man who had a long track record of crimes with and without a gun and at one time an Oklahoma judge ruled he was mentally incompetent to stand trial on an assault charge.
When the shooter opened fire Dec. 29 inside the Texas church, Jack Wilson, a former reserve deputy sheriff and firearms instructor who volunteered on the church's security staff returned fire.
Kinnuen was able to kill two parishioners inside the church before Wilson shot one time and hit the suspect in the head, killing him instantly.
It's sad that two people were killed, but if a legally-armed person had not been inside that church at the time who knows how high the casualty count would have gone.
I'll have to admit that I don't know much about Texas gun laws. I do know that in Alabama, Kinnuen would not have legally
been allowed to purchase a gun. I also know in Alabama if mentally disturbed people like Kinnuen want to get a gun, it's pretty easy.
He may not be able to walk into Walmart or any gun shop and buy a gun, but if he's got cash in his pocket he can go to multiple street corners, place his order and have a gun in a matter of minutes.
People like Kinnuen aren't worried about gun permits or being legal to have a gun, they have other plans bouncing around in their heads.
Do we have a gun violence problem in this country? Yes we do. But taking guns away from law abiding citizens is not the solution. It's law abiding citizens shooting back at those who want to commit gun crimes will solve the problem.
Had Wilson not been in that church, only God knows how many people Kinnuen would have killed. The two he killed are two too many, but we need to be thankful there was a legally armed man inside that church that stopped the threat in a matter of seconds – one shot to the head, 50 feet away, carnage over.
I read Wilson's quotes in several stories
where he says he's not a hero but “I see myself doing what was needed to be done to take out an evil threat.”
To me, he's not only a hero for the people who worship at West Freeway Church of Christ, he's a hero for gun rights and a hero that shows us the old NRA saying 'When you outlaw guns, only outlaws will have guns' is a true statement.
I could go on about other NRA sayings like 'Guns don't kill people, people kill people' but I won't although I agree with those phrases.
Guns are not the problem, people are the problem. Trying to disarm law-abiding people is not the solution.
I know somewhere there are some of those gun controlled nuts – some of them are running for president – who are scratching their heads wondering what would have happened if Wilson had not been in that church. Had Wilson not been there and Kinnuen had killed 20 to 30 people they would have had 'ammunition' to address gun control and blame guns. I hope they have the guts to blame the gun Wilson had in his hand for stopping mass killing.
