Off duty Flomaton police officers will now be able to be hired for outside jobs to provide security to businesses and churches paying the officer directly.
Police Chief Chance Thompson told the council that it had previously voted to allow the officers to take side jobs but said when he checked with the League of Municipalities he was told the council would have to pass a resolution to move forward.
Thompson said none of the money would come through the town, noting the vendors will pay the officers directly.
Town Attorney Chuck Johns said he had reviewed the resolution and said it was fine. He also told the council that several of the larger churches in Brewton are hiring off duty police officers to provide security.
Councilman Jim Johnson said it won't cost the town anything and he was in favor of the resolution. Councilwoman Dean said it will cost the town something with the use of a vehicle, but she also supported the measure.
The council then approved the resolution.
