Lesson includes decoding message using symbols to translate; students asked to provide child-rearing 'advice' for pregnant teacher
When Hilary Casey, a second grade reading teacher at Brewton Elementary School, returned from Christmas break she told them she had a secret to tell.
Instead of simply telling the students her secret, she designed a puzzle that her students had to figure out. The solution to the puzzle was 'my teacher is having a baby'.
"I told them it had been six years since I had a baby and I needed them to give me some advice," Mrs. Casey said.
So the students' assignment was to write down what advice they would give the teacher. Coming from second graders, they were not only true, but hilarious.
Joe Garrett wrote: "Put magnets on the high part of the fridge because if the baby eats them it will probably die. I don't know why, but my mom said when I was little I was always trying to eat the magnets."
Bailey told Mrs. Casey she had to feed the baby and make its milk. She also needed to change the baby's diaper.
Brooklyn said the baby needed to be fed every three hours and it needed to be changed, noting "Give it bellytime for 1 minute."
Noah Hayes told Mrs. Casey that once she has the baby she can say goodbye to her eardrum.
"Don't forget the carseat," Noah added. "You need the milk and the baby food."
According to Ashlee "If a baby is crying it is either hungry, poopy or sleepy. Do not leave the room until they are asleep. Once the baby is done eating be sure to burp it. A baby needs at least two passafires. A baby needs a lot of bottles."
Jackson said she would have to feed the baby soft food because it can't eat hard food.
"You need a crib so the baby can go in it," Jackson said. "If you hear the baby cry you get it a pasefiber."
"She needs to feed it," said Cnanam. "You need to kut it's hair. When it is older you have to take it to school. You need to sing to it. You need to roke it to sleep. You need to make if laf. You need to see if it's a boy."
Delvon told Mrs. Casey when the baby went to sleep she needed to be quite and needed to get the baby some toys for it's birthday and take the baby somewhere fun.
"When you have the baby make sure to give the baby milk," said Harmony Steen.
Harmony also said not to forget to bring the baby surprises and "sence your a teacher teach him some stuff when he grows up a little bit."
