A little more than a month ago, Century Mayor Henry Hawkins went into the Community Health Northwest clinic in Century because he said he was feeling sluggish and hadn't felt like himself.
“Once I walked in the clinic and they saw me initially, they gave me the choice to go to the emergency room or call an ambulance,” said Hawkins. Hawkins said the emergency room was his next stop.
A diabetic, Hawkins' kidneys had shut down, and he had an infection medical staff couldn't locate.
Mayor Hawkins was in Sacred Heart Hospital for more than three weeks, and is in the fifth week of treatment now.
“I am doing dialysis now several days a week and antibiotics seven days a week,” he said.
Council President Ann Brooks served as mayor while Hawkins was in recovery. In the ICU for part of his time in the hospital, he is now on the road to a full recovery.
Hawkins said he goes to his office at Century Town Hall once a week, since he was told to take it easy and not to do anything strenuous by his doctor.
“Health wise I'm feeling great,” said Mayor Hawkins. “As far as the town is concerned, I am very optimistic about the direction we are headed.”
