Smith accused of sex abuse of 7-year old; bond set at $500,000
A 62-year old Flomaton man is behind bars for the sexual abuse of a 7-year old girl and faces a possible 20-year sentence if convicted.
Stanley Dean Smith, 591 Stanley Road, was arrested by Flomaton police Feb. 21 and charged with sexual abuse of a child under the age of 12. He appeared before Escambia County (Ala.) District Judge Eric Coale and was issued a $500,000 bond.
Flomaton Police Chief Chance Thompson said the mother of the young girl came to the police department on Feb. 15 to report the incident, claiming her daughter had been inappropriately touched by Smith.
Thompson said an investigation was launched and, through interviews, a warrant was issued for Smith's arrest. Thompson also said Smith confessed to the crime when interviewed.
During Tuesday's bond hearing, Assistant District Attorney Todd Stearns told Judge Coale Smith is accused of digitally penetrating the child and admitted to putting his hands down her panties.
Stearns said he felt Smith was a threat to the community and asked Judge Coale to issue a bond of no less than $500,000. Coale then approved the $500,000 bond.
Should Smith be released on bond, he will be required to wear a GPS ankle bracelet and be placed under house arrest. He is also not to have any contact with the victim or anyone under the age of 18.
Judge Coale did grant Smith's request to be appointed a lawyer.
Stearns said sexual abuse of a child under 12 is a Class B felony that carries a sentencing range of 2 to 20 years. However, if the child is under the age of 12, which is the case in this instance, the minimum sentence is 10 years with a maximum of 20. Stearns also said, if convicted, Smith would not be eligible for good time due to the age of the child.
