The Sunshine Report

There is an old story about the Touchstone, a small black pebble that could turn common metal into pure gold.

The Touchstone was located on the shores of the Black Sea, lying among thousands of other pebbles which looked exactly like it. But there was one physical difference between the Touchstone and an ordinary pebble: the Touchstone would feel warm while the ordinary pebble was cold.

One day a man, who had heard the story about the Touchstone decided to sell his belongings, buy some supplies and a tent, and dedicate his time to trying to find the Touchstone.

So he set up camp and began to plan for testing the pebbles.

His plan was to throw the ordinary pebbles into sea because if he threw them back down on the ground, most likely he would simply pick them up again.

So when he felt one that was cold, he threw it into the sea. He did this day after day for three years, without finding the Touchstone.

One morning in the fourth year, he picked up a pebble and it was warm… but out of habit, he threw it into the sea before it registered on him that this was the Touchstone! “Oh my Lord, how could I have done that!” he cried out. He had so formed the habit of discarding cold pebbles into the sea that when the warm one finally came along, out of habit he threw it away.

Habits. We certainly are creatures of habits, aren’t we? It is very true that in the beginning we make our habits and in the end our habits make us.

It appears to me that we need to be very aware of what we cause because we are the cause of mostly what happens to us.

Habits have no bounds, concedes no limitations, and remain always at our beck and call.
