Monroeville man dies Sunday
A 27-year old Monroeville man was killed and his passenger was injured in a single-vehicle crash early Sunday morning in Flomaton that left Highway 31 closed to traffic for about three hours.
Samuel W. Colbert was killed after being ejected from the 2011 Jeep Cherokee he was driving. Officials with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency stated Colbert was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.
His passenger, Zachry Alsop, 26 of Atlanta, Ga., was airlifted to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola. An update on his condition was not available.
Flomaton emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene at 1:09 a.m. and discovered Colbert's body in the northbound lanes of Highway 31.
State troopers reported the crash occurred on Twin Bridges Road near the intersection of Highway 31 after Colbert's vehicle left the roadway and overturned.
The crash shut down Highway 31 until 4:11 a.m.
No further information was available as ALEA troopers continue to investigate.
According to information posted on Monroe Chapel's web page, Colbert was born in Brewton and had been a resident of Atlanta since 2013. He was also a former resident of Monroeville and worked with C.F. Real Estate as a property leasing manager.
He is the grandson of the late Charles and Glennie Colbert of Monroeville. His grandfather served as chief of police in Monroeville many years. He is the son of Gordon Colbert of Fayetteville, Tenn., and Prentiss Greene of Albany, Ga. Graveside services will be Friday at 3 p.m. at Poplar Springs Cemetery near Uriah with Rev. William Bodiford officiating.
