Jay fireworks on, others cancelled

The town of Jay will proceed with its annual Fourth of July celebration but the annual events in East Brewton, Century and Flomaton have been canceled.

Jay will hold its fireworks show at Bray-Hendricks Park at dark on Friday, July 3. The 5-K run will be held at 8 a.m. Saturday, July 4.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the city of East Brewton has canceled its Fourth of July activities that include a spades tournament, bingo, games, live entertainment, the duck race and fireworks.

The Century Town Council did not have a quorum for Monday morning's council meeting so no vote was taken. The special meeting was called to discuss July 4.

On the rotating basis, it was Century's year to host the fireworks show in a joint venture with the town of Flomaton. Both towns have traditionally put in $2,500 for the show that rotates from Hurricane Park and Showalter Park.

During Flomaton's council meeting Monday afternoon, the council voted not to spend the $2,500 for the fireworks show.

In other business Monday, the council:

- Voted to install 'No Thru Trucks' signs on Pleasant Street and Palafox Street.

Councilman Jim Johnson said 'No Thru Trucks' signs also need to be placed on Wilkerson Street.

“We need to have it done for all our side streets,” Johnson said. “There's no need for the big trucks to use the side streets.”

Councilwoman Lillian Dean also said there is a problem with big trucks on Martin Luther King Drive with trucks driving across the sidewalks.

“We need to curtail it as much as possible.”

- Passed a resolution awarding road work projects to R&R Contractors, LLC., that submitted the low bid of $176,055.

The town of Flomaton was approved for a Community Development Block Grant for the projects and Mayor Dewey Bondurant, Jr., said the Alabama Department of Transportation has approved giving the town $50,000 for the local match.

- Voted to renew the town's lines of credit at Escambia County Bank and United Bank.

- Heard from Police Chief Chance Thompson who told the council the department has been approved for grant funds to pay officers overtime during the Click-It-Or-Ticket campaign that will begin on June 28.
