A Jay man was arrested June 5 in Navarre, Fla., after cell phone footage revealed he pointed a weapon at a resident who was recording him speeding.
Michael James Starr, 30, 5312 Scott Street, was arrested and charged with felony assault when he drove down a street pointing a weapon at a resident who was holding an object Starr could not identify, according to a Santa Rosa County Sheriff's office report.
Thomas Yeary, a resident of Suncrest Street in Navarre, told deputies he was standing at the end of his driveway videotaping a speeder with his cell phone. Yeary said when the motorist passed, he was pointing a semi-automatic pistol directly at him.
The report said Yeary said he was in fear of being shot but he was able to capture the driver's tag number, which lead to the positive identification of Starr.
When authorities located Starr at his residence, Starr claimed Yeary rushed out in the roadway, holding an unknown object in his hand. Starr said he did not realize it was a cell phone until he got closer to Yeary.
The report said Starr's statement was not supported by the video footage. A Glock model 17 9mm was seized from Starr's vehicle.
Starr was arrested and charged with one count felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and transported to Santa Rosa County Jail. He was given a $5,000 bond.
