Councils eyes cameras

Flomaton Councilwoman Lillian Dean said vandalism at Oaks Common Park on Martin Luther King is a serious problem and asks her fellow council members to help fix the things broken and put up security cameras.

Utilities Superintendent Shaun Moye said the sink was ripped off the wall in the bathroom, paper bags were flushed down the toilet and the sign was damaged. He said it forced him to close bathroom.

Councilman Buster Crapps said he'd like to see a cost estimate on making the repairs and installing the cameras. He said the council could look at it at the next meeting.

In other business Monday, the council:

- Heard from Councilman Buster Crapps, who questioned why the first public forum was taken off the agenda.

“Public forum needs to be ahead of the agenda,” Crapps said. “We need it there now. We need it added.”

Mayor Dewey Bondurant, Jr., said it was taken off the agenda because nobody requested to address the council. He noted the council is still meeting via teleconference due to the COVID-19 pandemic and people are asked to submit questions or concerns to town hall.

“We need to keep it on the agenda,” Crapps said.

Bondurant said he would add it to the agenda.

- Heard from Police Chief Chance Thompson, who said he received a lot of complaints about fireworks over the Fourth of July holiday.

A town ordinance limits the shooting of fireworks from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. with the exception of New Year's, Fourth of July and Memorial Day. On those holidays, fireworks can be fired at anytime the day before, day of and day after.

Thompson said most of the complaints came the day after July 4.

The council discussed cutting the day after the holidays back to 10 p.m.

The council will discuss changing the ordinance at its next meeting.

- Voted to approve Kay Wagner to help Town Clerk Jamie Wilson with the upcoming municipal elections and named Court Magistrate as the alternate.

It was noted that people handling the election can't be on the ballot.

Mayor Bondurant said Wilson will need some help and asked that former Mayor Kay Wagner serve in that position.

Wilson also reminded the council that July 21, at 5 p.m., is the last day to qualify for the Aug. 25 municipal elections. She also said July 26 is the last day to establish residency to vote and that July 27 is the last day to file campaign forms with the judge of probate, after they qualify at town hall.

- Agreed to allow Fawn Sims to hold a softball clinic at Hurricane Park on a Saturday date to be named later.

- Voted 4-1 to transfer the off-premises beer license at the Chevron Station located at 22685 Highway 31 at the intersection of Highway 113.

Mayor Bondurant said he was approached by Mr. Patel, who said he was selling the store to his son.

Councilman Roger Adkinson voted no.
