COVID-19 is here, be safe

We have tried our best to keep everyone informed on the developments of COVID-19. Granted, sometimes our figures may not match up with numbers you see posted on Facebook or other social media outlets.

We made a decision at the beginning to base our reporting on figures we received from the Escambia County (Ala.) Health Care Authority. Jason Daniels, director of public affairs and marketing at D.W. McMillan Memorial Hospital, said from day one figures may be different depending on where someone gets tested.

Tuesday's numbers showed Escambia County with 571 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 12 deaths.

We will continue to use figures from the health care authority in our reporting.

Positive cases are rising and deaths are rising. The number of positive tests may be because we are testing more people but our bet is those numbers are low. Escambia County has a population of about 38,000 people and as of Tuesday, only 3,716 have been tested.

Wear a mask where you can, avoid large groups, wash your hands often and know that the person you follow into the store may be COVID-19 positive. Be safe as you can.
