Gov. Ivey taps YMCA director for the post
Steven Dickey, executive director of the Brewton Area YMCA, has joined the Escambia County Commission after Gov. Kay Ivey appointed him to fill the unexpired term of District 1 Commissioner David Stokes, who resigned his position Aug. 1.
Dickey, 56, will fill Stokes' unexpired term which ends in 2022. Dickey said he plans to seek the Republican nomination for the seat and a full four-year term in the 2022 election.
A native of Jackson, Miss., Dickey has worked for the YMCA since 1987. He worked at the Vicksburg, Miss., YMCA from 1987 to 1996, the Gainsville, Ga., YMCA from 1997 to 2001 and the Petal, Miss., YMCA from 2002 to 2007.
He and his family moved to Brewton in January, 2008, when Dickey was named director of the Brewton YMCA.
“I like to serve people,” Dickey said of the reason he applied for the commission seat. “I'm getting closer to retirement here at the Y and was looking for other ways to serve when that time comes.”
“I've been in public service for 33 years,” he said. “This will just be in another capacity.”
Dickey said he received a telephone call last Wednesday from Nathan Lindsey, appointment director for the governor's office, informing him the governor had selected him to fill Stokes' term.
Dickey said he first had to send a resume and later conducted a 15 to 20 minute Zoom interview.
“I'm humbled and excited,” Dickey said.
Dickey sat at the commission table for the first time Monday after he was sworn in by Escambia County District Judge Eric Coale.
Dickey and his wife Belinda have two children, Wes, 28, and Caleb, 26.
Stokes spent 30 years on the county commission but resigned his seat due to health issues
