Escambia's property tax is due today

Collector’s office open until 4 p.m.

People who own real property in Escambia County (Ala.) have until 4 p.m. today (Thursday, Dec. 31) to avoid late fees and penalties.

Tax Collector Tim Pettis said the tax collector's office at the courthouse in Brewton and at the satellite office in Atmore will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today. He also said tax payments sent through the mail must be post marked by Dec. 31 to avoid late fees. He added that it's the taxpayer's responsibility to make sure the post office applies the correct post mark date.

Pettis said property tax bills totaling $17,931,256 were mailed out in October and as of Wednesday morning $12,185,092.54 had been paid. At this time last year, $14 million had been collected.

“By the end of the day Thursday, we'll be right about where we were last year,” Pettis said.

Taxpayers will still have an opportunity to pay their taxes until those properties are put up for sale in May. Pettis did say beginning in March, no personal checks will be accepted to pay taxes, only certified funds will be allowed.

If anyone has any questions they can call the Brewton courthouse number at 251-867-0209 or the Atmore courthouse number at 251-368-8086.
