Coastal offering free financial workshop

College’s adult education program to hold program March 8 in Atmore; other opportunities set for education

Coastal Alabama Community College will host a free financial literacy workshop for adults and children from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, March 8, at the college's Atmore campus.

Kay Leigh Faircloth, adult education instructional coordinator and Ready to Work instructor, said the workshop will include instruction on planning and saving, credit and debt management, budgets and 'The Road Ahead'.

Children ages 7 and up are also welcome to attend. The children will participate in an interactive budgeting game while the adults attend the workshop.

Adult education

Coastal offers a wide variety of adult education courses from getting a GED to becoming OSHA certified as no cost.

The GED courses are offered either online or face-to-face. In-person classes are held from 8 a.m. to 12 noon Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at the Atmore and Brewton campuses. Classes are also held from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays at the Flomaton High School library.

The school also offers the High School Diploma Option online and face-to-face Monday through Thursday at the Atmore and Brewton campuses.

RTW and more

Coastal's Ready To Work program is also offered online and face-to-face providing basic training to get people ready to enter the workforce. The program offers things from basic education and computer skills to problem solving and time management. The program also helps participants work on job applications, resumes and interviews.

Participants who complete all portions of the GED or Ready To Work courses will also be eligible for a free four-credit course at the community college.

The adult education also offers beginner and advanced English as a second language and citizenship from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays at the Brewton campus.

Other free programs through the adult education program include the ServeSafe certification which is important for people who work in the restaurant business. The program, approved by the National Restaurant Association, teaches a variety of topics that include food safety and the handling of food.

Work Keys

Coastal's adult education programs also provide Work Keys, which upon completion provides students with a National Career Readiness certificate. The program involves areas such as applied math, workplace documents and graphic literacy.

The program also provides training in Microsoft office.

The program also offers Accuplacer, which provides instruction and testing that could allow students to bypass having to take remedial classes in college, which will save those students that tuition cost.

OSHA certified

Students completing the 10-hour OSHA certification program will be certified and ready to go to work in jobs that require such certification.
