Tears shed over Logan's smile

Flomaton Elementary sixth grader is killed in four-wheeler crash

The community of Flomaton and surrounding area is in mourning for 12-year-old Logan Mitchell, who lost his life in a four-wheeler accident this past Sunday, May 23.

Mitchell had just completed the sixth grade at Flomaton Elementary School and would have started next fall as a seventh grader at Flomaton High School.

FES Principal George Brown described Mitchell as 'a typical country Flomaton boy' who loved the creek, the country and being out in the woods hunting every chance he got.

"He had the best manners and respect for adults, for everyone," said Brown. "He would go out of his way to do and help. He had lots of friends just because of his heart. He was a popular kid."

Brown said Mitchell's mother, Lucinda, was a substitute teacher at the school, especially this last year following COVID.

"She was there a lot, so his day extended beyond the usual school day," said Brown. "He played with the other teachers' kids at the end of the day. He loved to hunt and fish, he was just a great-hearted kid."

Shawna Fillmore was Mitchell's homeroom teacher this year and she spoke through tears about the young man.

"He always brought a smile to all of our faces," said Fillmore. "He was willing to help me with anything and everything that I asked of him, or didn't ask of him. He was loved by everyone."

Fillmore said Mithell wanted to share his hunting stories with her, whether it was about a lizard all the way up to a hog.

"He helped every morning with breakfast, with another classmate," said Fillmore. "I never had to worry about any of the little things. His friends loved him a lot. He was one of those kind of kids that everybody wanted to sit next to be in a group with, because they knew he would be kind and know what was going on. You could tell he was raised perfectly, he exuded manners all the time."

Fillmore said Mitchell was a young gentleman, holding the door for the girls or for her, always showing respect for everyone around him. She describe him as a sweet spirit who stood at a recent classmate's memorial, where he led as he and others knelt and prayed in honor of their classmate.

"That was really special," said Fillmore. "That's the kind of kid he was. He always thought of others more important than himself. He loved his sisters, and it showed. He was definitely a big brother."

Luann Henderson, Mitchell's sixth grade math teacher, said she had a playful rivalry going on with Mitchell because she was an Auburn fan and he loved Alabama football.

"He was a very respectful, very fun, very outgoing kid," said Henderson. "He loved his sports and hunting and fishing so much. Every time I wore my Auburn shirt during spirit week, he'd give me grief about it."

Henderson recounted a time during school when she asked him to hand her Auburn cup to her and he told he couldn't hand it to her because he couldn't touch it.

"We had a good time together and knew when to stop in class when we were serious about class," said Henderson. "He was a great student in math. He was a great student all the around in all of his subjects. He was just a great kid all the way around. He's going to be missed really bad."

Mitchell had been a 4-H member since he turned 9 years of age, had taken part in many projects offered through the Escambia County Extension service, including Swine Projects, Chick Chains, Rabbit Project, Summer Camps, Summer Day Camps, Youth Council, RiverKids, Archery Club, was planning to participate in the 4-H Summer Camp and Day Camps this summer. Mitchell is described as respectful, attentive, always had a great attitude, and willing to show up and be a leader.

Mitchell was born in Mobile, Ala. and had been a life-long resident of Flomaton. He had a big heart and adored his hunting dogs, Duke and Brownie and attended Bethel Community Mennonite Church.
