Child restraint seats credited in accident

No injuries in roll over Tuesday afternoon

Two adults and three children escaped injuries Tuesday afternoon when their 1995 Ford F-150 pickup truck overturned on Old Fannie Road in Flomaton and Police Chief Chance Thompson and Fire Chief Steve Stanton said the use of child restraints seats for the children prevented a more serious situation.

Police and first responders were dispatched at 1:03 p.m. Tuesday to the single-vehicle cash on Old Fannie Road.

Thompson said the vehicle was traveling on Old Fannie Road toward Welka Road when it went off the left shoulder and overturned. All five occupants were able to climb out of the driver's side window to safety.

"Those child seats probably saved a life today," Stanton said. "They definitely saved one of those children from getting seriously injured."

When the fire department arrived, they handed out Teddy Bears and other stuffed animals to the children to help keep them calm.

"We carry those stuffed animals in the fire truck," Stanton said. "They come in real handy when young children are involved in a wreck or a fire."

Thompson echoed Stanton's sentiments on the child restraint seats saying it could have been real bad.

"There definitely could have been a different outcome," Thompson said. "We have a zero tolerance when it comes to child restraint seats and what happened Tuesday is why."

Thompson was not at liberty to release the names of the occupants of the vehicle, other than to say the driver was from Brewton.
