Council approves property tax increase and sets public hearing for Oct.4 to vote on the town's 2021-2022 budget
The Century Town Council held a special meeting Tuesday night to correct an error in the calculation of percentage of increase of the Fiscal Year 2021-2022 tentative millage rate of 0.9204, as compared to the rollback rate of 0.8853. Originally, the percentage of increase was over stated as 9.29 percent, instead of the corrected increase of 7.61 percent.
Last year's tax levy for the town was $39,478 and this year's is $41,905, a difference of almost $2,500.
In a motion made by Councilwoman Sandra McMurray Jackson, which was seconded by Councilwoman Dynette Lewis. Council members Luis Gomez, Jackson and Lewis voted unanimously to approve.
When asked why there was an increase in the millage rate this year, Century Interim City Manager Vernon Prather explained two reasons.
“The increase is due to increased expenses and increased capital projects for the town,” said Prather.
Budget
The Century council also approved the tentative budget for fiscal year 2021-2022 at $5,706,806. This total is 36 percent more than last year's budget of $4,149,362, due to a grant of about $2 million in the water and sewer fund and a Cares Act Grant of $390,000 in the Special Revenue Fund.
In a motion made by Councilwoman Jackson, which was seconded by Councilwoman Lewis, council members Gomez, Jackson, Lewis and Councilman James Smith voted unanimously to approve the motion.
There will be a public hearing on the budget and tax increase at 7:15 p.m., Monday, Oct. 4 at Century Town Hall at 7995 N. Century Boulevard. The meeting can also be accessed by calling 888-475-4499, then entering 5707035793 # and # again when prompted.
