Hearing is set for zoning

Meeting scheduled for 5 p.m. Nov. 4 at Flomaton Town Hall

The Flomaton Town Council will hold a public hearing at 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, at town hall during the town's planning commission meeting. The purpose of the hearing is for the council to receive comments regarding a proposed future land use map the council will vote on at a later date.

The zoning committee has held several meetings to discuss, modify and make changes to the plan it will present to the town council.

Diane Burnett with the South Alabama Planning Commission is helping the town develop a zoning plan that best fits Flomaton.

She told the committee on July 21 that there were three counties and 31 municipalities in the planning commission's region. Of the municipalities in the region she said Flomaton, Pollard and Riverview were the only three without some type of zoning.

Burnett said zoning will help bring businesses to Flomaton and also protect residential areas.

“When a business looks at coming to an area they need a little bit of protection,” she said. “It also protects the people's quite enjoyment of their property.”

Burnett said the current plan for Flomaton is a very limited zoning ordinance that creates one area for manufacturing, one for residential and one for businesses.

“It's really not restrictive,” she said.
