Council to meet Jan. 2 to fill council seats
The Century Town Council will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 2, at town hall to fill two vacancies on the council after Leonard White resigned his District 3 seat and James Smith did not qualify for re-election to his District 4 seat and no candidates qualified to fill that seat during the Nov. 8 municipal election.
As of this week five Century residents have voiced interest in filling the two vacant council seats on an interim basis until the town holds a special election no fewer than 60 days or no more than 90 days from the appointments. Those elected during the special election will serve the remaining time of the four-year term.
Residents who have thrown their name into the hat to fill the two vacancies are Corenda Phifer, Alicia Johnson, Edward Hammond, Shelisa Abraham and Michelle Dixon. Anyone else interested in filling one of the two council seats needs to contact town hall or show up at the Jan. 2 meeting.
The special meeting set for Jan. 2 is due to the town’s charter that states each member will take office on the first Monday of January. After the Jan. 2 meeting, regular council meetings will be held at 7 p.m. the first and third Tuesday of each month. The next regularly scheduled meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday Jan. 17.
Sandra McMurray-Jackson ran unopposed for her District 5 seat in the Nov. 8 election and will be sworn in at the Jan. 3 special election to create a quorum to select the two new council members.
Four of the five who have shown interest in being appointed to the seat say they intend to run for their seat in the special election. Johnson said at this time she has no plans to run for the seat.
