Fire gets out and spreads

Care issued on fires

At 12:20 p.m., last Thursday, the Flomaton Fire Department received a call about a brush fire between Sardine and Knowles Road in Flomaton suspected to be caused by a trash fire.

The wind caused the fire to spread from behind a residence on Sardine road into the wooded area, some 65 acres in danger of burning. Approximately 10 acres were involved, according to fire personnel.

Fire fighters arrived on scene to find a large section burning and kept the fire from spreading, while monitoring the wind direction and speed until Monroe County's Alabama Forestry Commission arrived with a bulldozer and plowed a new line.

According to Flomaton Fire Chief Steve Stanton, there was an old fire line in one area that helped keep the fire from spreading to nearby homes. No structures were damaged or destroyed by the blaze.

"People should be really careful when they burn trash and the wind is blowing," said Stanton. "It can very quickly get out of control."

The owner of the proerty said he and his sister, who has a residence there, decided not to do a control burn earlier that day because of the wind.

Lambeth, Pineview, Century, and Barnetts Crossroads Fire Departments, as well as the Alabama Forestry Commission assisted as it took several hours to extinguish the blaze completely.
