School board offers to take the control over Hurricane Park; meeting is set for Feb. 2
The town of Flomaton will hold a public meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, at town hall for the public to give input into a proposed plan for the town to relinquish its lease on Hurricane Park back to the Escambia County School System, which will then make the school board responsible for all improvements and maintenance.
On Aug. 27, 1985 the school board and the Flomaton Town Council agreed on a 99-year lease for the school-owned property. The agreement was signed by Mayor Frank Davis and Superintendent Raymond Beasley.
The agreement to lease the town the property stipulated it be used for constructing, maintaining and operating recreational facilities on the property with the town assuming construction and maintenance costs.
Mayor Dewey Bondurant, Jr., said the school board would now like to end the lease and take over the maintenance and expenses of operating the park and be responsible for any new construction.
School Superintendent Michelle McClung the school board is asking the town to end the lease and turn the property back over to the school system.
She said the school board wants to make upgrades the park. McClung added that once the school board takes over the park, it will be open to the pubic and youth activities like baseball, T-ball, softball and tennis will continue.
“We want to invest in facilities to invest in our students,” McClung said.
Mayor Bondurant said the Feb. 2 meeting is designed for residents to voice their opinions on the proposed plan to turn the property back over the school board.
The town council will have its regular council meeting at 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13.
