Escambia County (Ala.) administrator leaving position after 28-plus years with the county
Escambia County (Ala.) Clerk-Administrator Tony Sanks will step down from that position he's held for the past 28-plus years with his final day on the job set for May 19.
Sanks, 50, grew up in Atmore and was working at AmSouth Bank in Birmingham when he learned about the opening as the county clerk and decided to apply.
He said he's enjoyed his tenure as the clerk-administrator but felt the time was right to make change.
"I've honestly been thinking about it for more than a year," Sanks said. "I put it off waiting for a good time and realized there was never a really good time."
"I need to be more available to help with my family and it's time start a new chapter in life," Sanks added.
Sanks said he wasn't sure what he would do next, but has no plans to retire any time soon.
Sanks said he took some governmental accounting classes in college and he said that helped him transition into that position.
"If you know accounting you can learn governmental accounting," he said. "I've enjoyed it and I learned more than I ever thought I would about government. But it's been very interesting."
Sanks noted his decision to resign was discussed at the commission's administrative meeting Tuesday afternoon and he will put together a job summary and the commission will begin accepting applications.
