Kratom leads to trafficking charge in Ala.

Atmore woman thought she was in Florida

An Atmore woman, who said she thought she was still in Florida, was charged with trafficking Kratom following a traffic stop by a Flomaton police officer near the intersection of Old Atmore Road and Tulip Street.

Shaina Megan Brown, 33, 243 Wilson Ave., was issued a $1 million bond following her arrest on the trafficking charge.

Kratom, which is legal to purchase and possess in Florida, is illegal in the state of Alabama.

Flomaton Police Officer Charlie Land initiated the traffic stop March 31 on Old Atmore Road and was assisted by the Escambia County (Ala.) Sheriff's Office.

Court records state that Brown had 250 grams of Kratom in her vehicle: one full, unopened and one bag about a quarter full.

Police stated that when questioned about the Kratom, Brown said she thought she was still in Florida. She was arrested and transported to the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton on the trafficking charge and also charged with having an open container.
