Chosen to fill Bondurant's remaining term
Jim Johnson was sworn in Monday afternoon as mayor of Flomaton to fill the unexpired term of Dewey Bondurant, Jr., who resigned the mayor's position April 10.
Johnson, 63, has served on the town council since 2000 and was mayor pro tem at the time Bondurant stepped down.
Councilwoman Lillian Dean made the motion Monday to appoint Johnson as mayor and the motion carried unanimously. The council voted to declare Johnson's former District 3 council seat vacant and Johnson said he will nominate someone to fill that seat at the next council meeting, scheduled for 4 p.m. Monday, May 22.
"I thank ya'll for your confidence and I accept," Johnson said after Monday's vote.
Town attorney Chuck Johns issued the oath of office to Johnson and he took his seat as mayor for the council meeting.
A 1978 graduate of Century High School, Johnson went straight to work. He retired from Genesis Energy in 2016.
"I've been doing it as mayor pro tem and felt I could step in and help move Flomaton forward," Johnson said.
He said one key project is the continued work downtown to bring more businesses to that area.
"I want to thank Dewey for years he served and the great job he did as mayor," Johnson added. "I appreciate everything he has done for Flomaton and hope I can continue."
Johnson said he wants to work with the Flomaton schools and the industrial development authority to try and make Flomaton grow.
"There are so many opportunities here to make Flomaton better," he said.
Johnson will serve the remainder of Bondurant's term which ends in 2025. Flomaton will hold its next municipal elections in the fall of 2025.
When asked if he planned on running for a full term as mayor in 2025, Johnson "first things first".
"Lets focus on the next two years to move Flomaton forward," he said.
