Flomaton, Atmore wrap up spring training and now looking ahead
Flomaton High School head football coach Doug Vickery said he was pleased with the team's effort as the Hurricanes closed out spring training with a 34-12 victory over Escambia County High School.
"You always wonder how your guys will perform under the lights against a quality opponent," Vickery said. "Coach Harris does a great job at Atmore and I expected a challenge. I thought we answered that challenge."
The first half pitted the two teams' varsity players which saw Flomaton end the first two quarters 28-6 and the second half featured junior varsity and younger players who battled to a 6-6 tie.
"I thought we played very physical on both sides of the ball," Vickery said.
He noted the Hurricanes were able to control the ball in the first half with Flomaton running 37 offensive plays and the Blue Devils running 19 plays.
"We were able to control the ball and forced their defense to stay on the field," he said.
Vickery said the coaching staff will now study the game film to see what areas need the most attention but felt Flomaton played well.
He noted Ryder Spence led the team in tackles and Miles Adams was the second leading tackler. He added that Blake Macks had an interception and Luke Blackburn had a fumble recovery.
"The defense played well," Vickery said.
Offensively, Flomaton played four quarterbacks during the game with Jaden Sandiego, Micah Presley and Macks seeing most of the action.
Coach Vickery also said running backs Jax Fillmore, Keaton Johnson, Lance Presley and Spence ran the ball well with Ian White and Zack Herndon doing a good job up front blocking.
"We've got a lot of things to work on but I was pleased with how the spring training went," Vickery said.
