Poarch CFO killed in crash in Baldwin

Three people killed in multi-vehicle crash June 18; man charged with DUI, manslaughter

The Poarch Band of Creek Indians' Chief Financial Officer Daryl Speegle was one of three people killed in a three-vehicle crash June 18 on the Baldwin Beach Express near County Road 48 that led to the arrest of a man charged with DUI and three counts of manslaughter.

Speegle, 64, of Trussville, Ala., Christie Lowe, 47, Pelham, Ala., and her daughter Margaret Lowe, 19, were also killed in the multi-vehicle crash.

David Colburn, no age or address given, was treated for minor injuries, arrested and transported to the Baldwin County Corrections Center and was being held on $60,000 bond at press time Wednesday.

According to information released by the Robertsdale Police Department, officers responded to the three-vehicle crash at 2:38 p.m. on Sunday.

Police reported that Colburn was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer traveling south on the Baldwin Beach Express when the front of his vehicle hit the rear of a 2017 Dodge Ram pickup truck driven by Christie Lowe.

Reports state the collision resulted in Lowe losing control of the pickup truck which then crossed the grass median into the northbound lanes and entered the path of Speegle's 2018 GMC Yukon.

Christie Lowe and Margaret Lowe were pronounced dead at the scene. Two other occupants in Lowe's vehicle, who were not named, were transported to Sacred Heart Hospital for non life-threatening injuries.

Speegle was found in critical condition and was also transported to Sacred Heart Hospital where he later died. Speegle's wife was transported to Sacred Heart Hospital in critical condition. An update on her condition was not available at press time.

Robertsdale police stated evidence of alcohol consumption was observed on Colburn and he was arrested for DUI at the scene. He was later charged with three counts of manslaughter.

Police noted that state troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency assisted with the investigation and the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office and Summerdale Police Department assisted with traffic control.

Police also stated the crash is still under investigation and additional charges are pending.
