Two Brewton women struck by vehicles crossing Highway 29 last Thursday in Century
One Brewton woman is dead and another remains in the intensive care unit at Sacred Heart Hospital after the two were struck by vehicles Thursday, night, July 6, as they crossed Highway 29 in Century coming from Vallarta Mexican Grill.
Jenny Lum Akerman, 53, and Jessica Mathis, 34, were both struck crossing the highway in from of the 910 North Boulevard restaurant. Helicopters landed in the Dollar General Store parking lot to transport the two to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola.
Akerman died later from her injuries and as of press time Wednesday, Mathis remained in intensive care.
According to reports released by the Florida Highway Patrol, about 8:30 p.m. the two women were crossing Highway 29 heading west when they were hit.
A driver, only identified as being 36 years old from Flat Rock, Ala., in a pickup truck was traveling south as the two women were crossing the highway.
The driver tried to swerve but hit Ackerman. Mathis then entered the south bound lane to help Ackerman and was hit by an SUV, which was also traveling south on Highway 29. The driver of the SUV was identified as a 71 year old Brewton resident.
Reports note that neither driver was injured. No other information was released by the Florida Highway Patrol.
