Bain art show to also highlight the PorchFest events

Activities to kick off at 11 a.m. this Saturday

In conjunction with the city of Brewton's PorchFest this Saturday, the Brewton Council of the Arts will be hosting the Lee Bain Brewton Invitational Art Show from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 623 Belleville Ave.

PorchFest will be from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. along the 600 block of Belleville and Evergreen avenues.

Bain came to Brewton in the 1970s through a grant from the National Endowment of the Arts and the Alabama State Council on the Arts and Humanities. The grant was made possible by private funds and Bain was given the opportunity to come to Brewton to serve as an artist in schools.

Bain worked with the schools for a couple of years and was then hired to teach art at T.R. Miller High School, the first year the school offered an art class.

Bain taught at T.R. Miller for the next 10 years and became active in the Brewton Council of the Arts and was instrumental in organizing the first Brewton Invitational Art Show.

When Bain came to Brewton, he had to return to college in order to be able to teach. He graduated from Troy State University with a teaching certificate and a master's degree in arts education.

Saturday's art show in Brewton will have two divisions: youth 18 and under and adults 19 and older.

To register, contact Clay Lisenby, Shannon Brantley or Connie Baggett at 251-809-1777.

In lieu of an entry fee, participating artists will donate an item of their work to be auctioned by the Brewton Council of the Arts. Proceeds will fund scholarships for art students in the Brewton area. Cash donations will be accepted if artists prefer.

The categories include weaving and textiles, beadwork, pottery, jewelry and Lapidary, cultural items, drawings, paintings, photographs, college and mixed media, sculpture, computer generated art, graphics and baskets.

Judges will award medallions to the winner of each category and from those winners a $500 prize will be awarded for Best of Show and two $100 awards for overall special merit.
