One is arrested for shooting in Frisco

Sheriff seeks help locating more suspects

Monroe County Sheriff's deputies and Frisco City police arrested a Monroeville man last week on two counts of attempted murder that stem from a Feb. 24 shooting that left six people with gunshot wounds.

According to Monroe County Sheriff Tom Boatwright, officers arrested Dematray Williams, 25, of Monroeville Wednesday of last week on two counts of attempted murder. Officers arrested Williams around 1:19 p.m. on Spotlight Road and transported him to the Monroe County Jail.

Williams had his initial appearance in court Friday and his bond was set at $120,000. His bond was later revoked in light of the fact that he was already out on a bond on an attempted murder charge that stemmed from an earlier shooting at the Diamond gas station in Monroeville, officials said. Williams remained in jail as of Tuesday afternoon.

Williams's most-recent arrest stems from the Feb. 24 incident that involved a pair of late night shootings in Frisco City. That shooting left six people with gunshots wounds, including two who were left in serious condition.

Boatwright said he expects more arrests and additional charges to arise out of the continuing investigation into the shooting.

"The case is being actively investigated with law enforcement committed to identifying and prosecuting all involved individuals," Boatwright said.

During the Feb. 24 incident, two people were shot around 12:30 a.m. inside a vehicle on County Road 23. Those gunshot victims had just left the scene of a fight at a bonfire in a field on private property not far from the old ball fields on Snyder Avenue in Frisco City.

Fifteen to 20 minutes after the shooting on County Road 23, gunfire erupted at the bonfire, and four people were shot at that time.

The six victims ranged in age from 17 to 30 years of age, and all were transported to the hospital, including one who was flown to a large regional hospital by medical helicopter.

Deputies along with police officers from Frisco City and Monroeville responded to the shootings, and the ensuing investigation determined that at least three to four shooters were involved in the incident. Investigators believe that handguns and rifles were used in the shootings.

"We urge anyone with any information to come forward and contact us immediately," Boatwright said. "All information will be treated confidentially."

"Your cooperation and assistance in this matter is crucial in helping law enforcement bring those responsible to justice," Boatwright added. "As the investigation progresses, more information will be released to the public. We are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of the community and will continue to provide updates on this incident as new developments arise."

Individuals with information about the shooting are asked to call the Monroe County Sheriff's Department at 251-575-2963 or 252-575-4716 or their nearest law enforcement agency.
