'Suspicious' person call at alternative school ends with fight, tasers and multiple charges
A Fairhope man was transported to the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton Tuesday afternoon following a struggle and fight with four Flomaton police officers, who also tased the suspect twice.
William Christopher Crooks, 58, was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, criminal trespassing and failing to obey a police officer and disorderly conduct.
Police Chief Dane NeSmith said the school resource officer, who had already left campus, called the police department at 4:14 p.m. in reference to someone parked outside the alternative school who was harassing teachers as they exited the building.
NeSmith said the teachers went back inside the building and locked the door.
NeSmith said when the first officer arrived on the scene and approached the suspect, later identified as Crooks, and started asking questions, Crooks would not cooperate.
"He started reaching for stuff inside his vehicle and putting his hands in his pockets," NeSmith said.
A second officer arrived and grabbed Crooks to get him out of the vehicle and Crooks began to fight.
A third officer arrived and tased Crooks but it did not phase him. He was tased a second time which was also ineffective in bringing him under control.
NeSmith said he showed up and the officers were able to get Crooks under control and in handcuffs.
NeSmith said he contacted EMS to check Crooks out before transporting him to jail and found no serious injuries or other issues.
