Carriers to gather food Saturday

Flomaton post office to accept donations

Rita Thomas, a 26-year veteran city of Brewton mail carrier, is reminding residents to participate in the post office’s carrier food drive this Saturday, May 11.

“Many area churches, as well as the local food bank, benefit greatly from our annual collection of non-perishable food items,” Thomas said. “They, in turn, are able to give assistance to those in need.”

She added that the food drive is a way for everyone in the Brewton community to come together to help neighbors facing hunger and have food on their table and in their pantry.

“All you have to do is leave non-perishable goods like canned meat, canned veggies, pasta and peanut butter in a bag by your mailbox,” She said.

Flomaton Postmaster Tracy Palmer said the post office’s food drive is directed toward cities that have home delivery and noted Flomaton is considered a rural post office and is not participating.

However, she encouraged people to bring their non-perishable goods to the Flomaton post office and place them on the counter as they walk into the post office.

“We’ll collect the food and donate it to a local church’s food bank to help our community,” Palmer said.
