Flomaton seeks grant for sewer

Lift station installed in 90’s to be replaced

Following a public meeting to discuss applying for a $400,000 grant to replace a sewer lift station on Cary Street, the Flomaton Town Council gave its OK to proceed, which will require a $45,000 match if the grant is awarded.

Cara Stallman with Grant Management, LLC., told the council Monday afternoon that the deadline to apply for the Community Development Block Grant was July 2. She also told the council she didn’t get paid unless the grant was approved.

Utilities Superintendent Shaun Moye said the lift station was installed around 1995 or 1996 and needed to be replaced.

In other business Monday, the commission:

- Approved installing cameras at Oak Commons Park at a cost of $4,500. Moye said the camera can be monitored 24 hours a day, seven days a week and all 365 days of the year.

Moye also told the council it was a good start and the quality of the camera will be able to identify any person who causes problems at the park on Martin Luther King Drive.

He also told the council he’s getting prices to put up other cameras at parks that could be fed live into the dispatch room at town hall. It was also noted the $4,500 was included in the current budget.

- On the advice of Town Attorney Chuck Johns, the council voted to table a franchise agreement with Unity Fiber.

- Approved replacing a 6-inch drain pipe on Holt Street with an 8-inch pipe at a cost of $6,116.Moye said the price could go up but if easements were needed but Mayor Jim Johnson he’d talked to property owners and said they would give the easements.

Mayor Johnson said after recent heavy rainstorm the current draining pipe couldn’t handle the water and flooded some areas.

- Approved spending $12,820 for a new generator for the Flomaton Fire Station. Moye told the council it would cost $4,000 to $5,000 to replace the current generator. Johnson noted he was told a year ago about the need for a new generator and the money was included in the budget.

- Approved spending $4,125 to replace sidewalks on Ringold Street.

- Approved a request from Vanessa Washington to hold a cancer walk on Oct. 26 that will begin at the high school and come through downtown.

- Went into executive session with Johns to discuss pending litigation. No action was taken after the executive session.
