Paws Crossed seeks adoptions, fosters

Since opening Brewton rescue shelter in 2016, 3,253 dogs have found new homes

Since Brewton's Paws Crossed Rescue opened in 2016, the organization has adopted out 3,253 dogs to loving homes and more adoptions are needed.

This past Saturday, Paws Crossed held an open house to showcase the dogs and puppies that need a home. Paws Crossed was established as a no-kill shelter and volunteers at the shelter work to find homes for the dogs and puppies.

The cost of adopting a dog from Paws Crossed is $175, which includes the dogs being either spayed or neutered and up to date on all shots. Puppies adopted under four months old are also $175, but those who adopt the puppies will receive an $85 rebate once the puppy is spayed or neutered.

Renee Johnson, who is on staff with Paws Crossed, said in addition to the dogs housed at the shelter, there are dogs being housed in foster houses.

"We have about 85 dogs hunting a home," Johnson said. "We've got about 20 at the shelter and the rest are in foster homes."

Johnson said she is currently fostering nine dogs and Paws Crossed director Edi Kelley is fostering 16.

"We do need more people to become fosters," Johnson said. "We keep about 20 dogs at the shelter, but others need to have foster homes."

Those wanting to foster dogs, must fill out an application to make sure the dog they are fostering is going to a loving home.

Johnson added that people fostering dogs will be provided all the items needed such as food and there is no out-of-pocket expense to the person or family fostering the dog.

She said they recently had a dog adopted to New York, noting that Brewton's Paws Crossed is working with a rescue organization in New York.

What keeps Paws Crossed operating? Donations, whether in cash or gifts of food and other items.

Paws Crossed is a 501-C3 non profit and people giving gifts of cash or supplies will receive tax receipts for cash or food.

Johnson said all dogs either being housed at the shelter or in foster homes can be found on PetFinder.com.

Donations can be made through Pay Pal at [email protected] or can be mailed to 110 Wilson St., Brewton, 36426.

Donations can also be made to Brewton Animal Hospital Hospital under a Paws Crossed account or by calling 251-867-4355.
