No drill!

FES evacuated in less that a minute after the fire alarm

Flomaton Elementary School Principal Courtney McBride said there were no plans to have a fire drill on the second day of school, but about 385 students from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade were evacuated in less than a minute when the fire alarm went off Thursday morning.

McBride noted that even without any fire drills the teachers and students did exactly what they were supposed to do.

'Everybody knew what to do," said FES teacher Melanie Kent.

Flomaton Fire Chief Steve Stanton said a 'hot spot' was found near an electrical outlet in the classroom across from the office, but added the alarm went off due to a censor in the new portable wing.

Stanton said McBride called him when she smelled smoke and was enroute when the alarm went off and noted all children were out of the building when he arrived.

Students were immediately evacuated and due to the heat, those classes that couldn't find shade were directed to the old gym.

Stanton said Flomaton and Century fire departments responded and noted power was cut off of the outlet that was hot.

Students were then allowed to re-enter the building. Stanton also praised the students and faculty for getting out of the building as soon as possible with no problems.
