Stops for no seatbelt lead to officers finding drugs inside vehicle
Separate traffic stops by Flomaton police for seatbelt violations led to the arrest of two people on drug charges that included methamphetamine.
On Aug. 13, Officer Derrick Hodges was on patrol about 6:50 p.m. when he inititated a traffic stop for a seatbelt violation. According to reports, the driver, identified as Leslie Teresa McCann, 36, 729 Jackson St., Flomaton, pulled into a private driveway of a residence of someone she didn’t know.
Hodges reported that due to her behavior, he contacted K-9 Officer Dewayne Longmire. Reports state the dog alerted on the vehicle and a search revealed a small plastic bag containing a crystalize substance that field tested positive for meth. Officers also found a plastic bag that contained marijuana, a straw used to ingest narcotics and a glass pipe.
McCann was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of marijuana II and unlawful possession of marijuana.
On Aug. 15, about 3:20 p.m., Officer Longmire initiated a traffic stop near the intersection of Highway 29 and Wilkerson Street, also for a seatbelt violation. The driver was identified as Javis Cain Grimes, 40 of Gilmore Road, Century.
According to police reports, Longmire asked Grimes to step out of the vehicle and noted Grimes’ belt was unbuckled and noticed something sticking out of the top of his pants.
Grimes was detained and the report stated Grimes said the object in his pants contained marijuana.
Longmire retrieved a rolled up paper towel that contained marijuana and meth.
Grimes was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of marijuana II.
Both suspects were transported to the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton.
